Diversity in Commercials: Corey and Cheerios!

It’s been a while since I’ve brought you a Friday entry; lots of reasons, no need to bore you with them. :-)

When I write, I like white noise in the background. Complete silence freaks me out. Sometimes, when my mind needs a little freedom, I’ll put the TV on but mute it. That way, when I look up, to take a break from the computer screen, I’m surprised by what’s on the TV and that sometimes leads to a breakthrough.

Crazy? Maybe. But it works for me.

Anyhoo, this past week, I noticed a trend when my gaze happend upon the TV: groups of people, mostly white, with a couple of minorities sprinkled in. If the minority was black, they always had “natural” hair. Didn’t matter if it was a man or a woman, they had “natural” hair. This made me think of a Weekend Update sketch on SNL: Corey, the non-threatening guy in all Super Bowl commericals.

On the other hand, this commercial surprised me so much, I had to rewind the Tivo. There are many interracial families, and the representation on TV shows has increased, but to see one portrayed on a TV commercial was wonderful. Bravo, Cheerios!  **When I went searching for the commercial I found this article, It’s 2013 and People are Still Getting Worked Up About Interracial Couples in Ads.**

What did you think of the videos? Have you noticed a trend in marketing that has bothered or pleased you?

Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend.

Veronica Mars Movie Project!

Hello Marshmallows!! :-)

I am a huge Veronica Mars fan. If you’ve never watched the show, please check it out on Netflix. It was this crazy mixture of teen drama and film noir with a kick-ass heroine who was smart, sexy and brave. Truly, VM is great TV.

The show ended before the fans were ready and there was talk for years of a Veronica Mars movie. Finally, with Kickstarter, the talk has turned into reality.

I pledged money to the Kickstarter project and as a backer, I’ll get updates all through the filming of the movie- due next year and I’ll share those videos with you.

Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend.

The Fructose is Hitting the Fan!

This is one of my favorite skits from SNL.

They haven’t shown these commercials on TV in awhile, but I remember talking to other stay at home moms about them. I think this skit manages to get both “sides” right.

Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend.

Between Two Ferns: Oscar Edition!

Now that the heaviness of the Oscars are behind us, not to mention the blah red carpet, have a laugh at a little internet chat fest hosted by that cutting edge journalist Zach Galifianakis.  And because I love my readers, I’ve included a clip with the dreamy Bradley Cooper.

Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend.

You’re welcome.

Girls’ Marnie Re-imagines Kanye!

I don’t think Marnie sounded bad, although this may not have been the best forum. If she’d done this on Idol or The Voice, she would’ve been praised for her “creativity.” So for those of you who missed it the first go-round, here’s Marnie’s cover of Kanye West’s Stronger.

Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend.

If you’ve followed my blog for awhile, you’d know I’m a big fan of So You Think You Can Dance, FOX’s summer dance reality show. If you need some examples of what they’ve done on the show, do a search of my site and you’ll find lots of SYTYCD routines.

It’s no surprise that on a show full of young, sexy dancers, there would be lots of hookups. Famous couples from the show have included:

Season 3′s Lacey Schwimmer and Hok Konishi

Season 7 winner Lauren Froderman and Season 3′s Dominic Sandoval.

But one of the most popular have been tWitch & Allison and recently, they’ve taken a big step towards making it official.

Congratulations to the pair and check them out in their work element below.  Young love is beautiful.

Enjoy and have a great weekend.

He’s a hunk o’ Burning Love!

There is nothing wrong with going on a reality show to meet the love of your life. Really.

Sure, you have to vie for his attention with 25 other women. Yes, cameras follow you everywhere. Of course, your eventual rejection will be seen by millions of viewers and shared and retweeted numerous times. There’s nothing weird about that, right?

Right?

E! has a new show that’s a parody of the Bachelor. It’s called “Burning Love.” It’s hilarious, especially if you happen to watch the Bachelor and Bachelorette, which *raises hand, ducks head* I do.

Check out this clip of the infamous first meet scene. The limo pulls up, some girl steps out and the journey to crazy begins.

Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend.

Shout out to Catherine on the real Bachelor. I hope she “wins.”

The State of Mindy’s Unions

I’ve been a fan of Mindy Kaling since she was first on NBC’s The Office.  I have this thing I do when I watch a show:  I look for people of color to root for. Maybe it’s a leftover habit from growing up; trying to find someone who looked like me on TV. Anyway, Mindy caught my eye, for obvious reasons, and when I found out she was a writer on the show, as well as an actor, she got Tracey’s Seal of Approval.

A few years ago Mindy left The Office and I was so happy to hear that she would get her own show on Fox. It debuted this season and quickly earned Season Pass status.

It’s fun, quirky, smart and a real treat to watch. Please check out The Mindy Project, Tuesdays at 9:30 pm  on Fox. Watch the video below to get a sample of the hilarity that is Mindy Kaling.

Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend.

Cat-Friend vs. Dog-Friend

People say you’re either a cat person or a dog person. This video asks would that still be true if applied to your friends.

Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend.

Yeah, we’re a bit touchy…

This video has been making it’s way around the web. It’s hilarious.

Set-up: A man named Richard posted a complaint on Bodyform’s (a British feminine hygiene company) Facebook page.

This was their response.

A lot more subdued than SNL’s take on women and their menses.  (Annuale)

Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend.
